Before the first charge
A free-trial checklist: decide before the first paid renewal
Record the trial deadline, billing route and renewal amount, then keep the cancellation confirmation so a trial does not become a forgotten subscription.
The useful answer
When you start a free trial, record who bills you, the paid renewal amount and the cancellation deadline shown in the offer. Set a reminder before that deadline, decide whether to keep the service and complete the correct billing provider’s cancellation flow. Removing the app or setting a reminder does not itself cancel a subscription.
What to know
- The company taking payment may be an app store rather than the service you use.
- Check the deadline and time zone; do not assume every trial can be cancelled on its final day.
- Keep evidence of the end date and whether renewal is switched off.
Create the record when you start the trial.
A trial can be missing from a bank-statement review because the first subscription payment has not happened yet. Use the sign-up screen and confirmation email rather than waiting for a recurring charge to appear. Keep the record somewhere you already review.
Write down the price after any introductory period, its currency and billing frequency. A low first payment does not tell you the ongoing cost. If the offer changes to a yearly payment, record the amount payable at once as well as any monthly equivalent.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Service and account | Service name and which account owns it |
| Billing route | Provider, Apple, Google Play or another partner |
| Deadline | Date, time zone and any earlier cancellation requirement |
| Next payment | Full amount, currency and weekly/monthly/annual frequency |
| Decision and proof | Keep/cancel; confirmation reference and access end date |
Use the account that owns the subscription.
For Apple-billed subscriptions, Apple’s current guidance says to cancel a trial at least 24 hours before it ends. On iPhone, the subscription controls are under your name in Settings. Check the receipt if you cannot find the subscription; another Apple Account or another billing company may own it.
For Google Play billing, use Subscriptions in the relevant Google Account and finish the cancellation prompts. Google says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. If the service bills you directly, use its own account settings and terms. Follow the rules for your country and particular offer rather than applying one platform’s deadline to every service.
Leave room to make and verify the decision.
Set the decision reminder early enough to deal with an inaccessible account or a different billing route. If you intend to cancel immediately, first check whether that ends trial access straight away. Do not assume you will always keep access until the advertised final day.
A second check can be useful after you act: open the subscription page again and confirm the renewal state. A calendar event marked “cancel” only records an intention; it is not evidence the provider accepted a cancellation.
Compare the ongoing commitment, not the introductory headline.
Imagine a trial that becomes £9 per month and another that becomes £80 per year. Twelve £9 payments total £108; £80 divided by twelve is about £6.67 per month. The annual option still requires £80 at renewal, and may be a poor fit if you only need the service briefly.
These invented amounts are arithmetic examples, not prices or a recommendation to buy a yearly plan. Consider whether you will use the service, whether the up-front payment fits your budget and what the actual cancellation terms allow.
Close the loop after cancellation.
Stopping renewal is not automatically a refund and may not remove instalments already owed under a payment plan. If you already have recurring charges to investigate, use the forgotten-subscriptions guide; it solves the different task of finding payments that have begun.
- Save the confirmation or a short private note of its reference and date.
- Record the access end date and check that the account no longer shows an unwanted renewal.
- Remove the future cost from your plan only when the relevant obligation has ended.
- Check the next expected payment date against the confirmation. If charged unexpectedly, use the billing provider’s support or refund route.
