Find the account behind the charge

How to cancel Apple and App Store subscriptions

Find subscriptions billed by Apple, resolve a missing subscription and keep a clear record of what has actually been cancelled.

The useful answer

On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, choose Subscriptions and select the service, then use Cancel Subscription. If it is missing, check the Apple receipt to identify the account and billing provider. An app installed on your phone is not necessarily billed through Apple.

What to know

  • Find the billing account before looking for a cancellation button.
  • Apple’s subscription controls cover subscriptions billed through Apple.
  • Keep the expiry or end date and check the next expected payment.

Match the payment to the right account.

Start with the receipt and the charge you want to understand. Write down the service, amount and payment date. That gives you something specific to match when you open subscription settings, instead of cancelling a similarly named service by mistake.

If several people use the same device or payment arrangement, establish whose account owns the subscription. You can help somebody find the correct settings without asking for their password or taking over their account.

Use the Apple subscription controls.

  1. On iPhone, open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Open Subscriptions and choose the service you want to stop.
  3. Select Cancel Subscription and follow the confirmation shown.
  4. Check the resulting expiry information. Apple says no Cancel button or a red expiry message indicates an already-cancelled subscription.

If the subscription is not in the list.

Apple recommends checking the receipt to see which Apple Account was used. A different account or a family member’s account can explain why a subscription is absent. If another company bills you, use that company’s cancellation process. Apple also links to subscription management on account.apple.com.

Keep the investigation small: start with one charge and resolve its owner. A missing result is not proof that the payment cannot recur. If you still cannot match the charge, contact the relevant provider with the amount and date, leaving out sensitive account credentials.

Check what you need before access ends.

Decide whether you need to export something, change a shared routine or choose an alternative before the subscription ends. The right preparation depends on the service: a storage product and an entertainment subscription can have very different consequences. Read that provider’s details rather than assuming every app behaves alike.

Keep the final status and end date together with your budget notes. If a payment still appears, compare its billing period with the confirmed cancellation rather than immediately assuming it represents a new renewal.

Turn a one-off fix into a useful review.

An occasional sweep is easier than rediscovering the same problem at every renewal. Record the services you keep, what they are for and the next date you want to review them. Annual subscriptions deserve a future reminder even when this month’s statement is quiet.
