Check the whole saving

Bill switch savings calculator

Check whether a lower monthly bill still saves money after exit fees and setup costs.

The useful answer

Enter the old and new monthly cost, all one-off switching costs and a comparison period. The calculator shows the net cost difference and the number of whole months a lower monthly price takes to recover upfront fees.

Net saving over your comparison period

£84.00

Current total £480.00; new total £396.00. The lower monthly cost recovers upfront fees after 5 whole months.

Compares fixed monthly costs over the same period. Include every exit and setup fee. Check price rises, introductory discounts, usage, contract length and service differences separately.

What to know

  • Compare the same number of months for both options.
  • Put exit fees and setup charges into the one-off cost.
  • This simple model assumes prices stay constant over the entered period.

Collect the numbers that change the answer.

Use the current monthly cost and the new monthly cost for comparable services. Add any exit fee and setup charge together. Choose a period that makes sense for the contracts rather than automatically comparing a discounted first month.

If a price changes halfway through the term, this simple fixed-price tool cannot represent that change in one monthly number. Work out the full-period cost separately and compare the totals.

Net saving and break-even.

Net saving = (current monthly cost minus new monthly cost) × months, minus one-off costs. Break-even divides the one-off costs by the monthly reduction and rounds up to a whole month.

If the new monthly cost is the same or higher, there is no lower monthly price to recover a switching fee. The tool reports that instead of presenting a misleading payback time.

Compare the service as well.

A lower price can come with a different speed, data allowance, coverage or contract length. Check whether the option meets your needs. For energy, compare the underlying tariff and relevant usage rather than treating a Direct Debit adjustment as a guaranteed saving.

Ofcom’s broadband switching guidance explains the One Touch Switch process and the need to check early termination charges. Use the current provider information for the actual terms that apply to you.

Keep the comparison and the switch separate.

A positive result means the numbers entered produce a saving under these assumptions. It does not submit a switch, check eligibility or verify a quote. Read the offer before applying and keep the provider’s confirmation afterwards.
